Why You Should Visit

For a few weeks each autumn, the Garan precinct of Daigoji, a World Heritage temple in southeast Kyoto, opens after dark. The highlight is Rinsen, the pond beside the Kannon Hall, where the lit maples are mirrored on the water. The National Treasure Golden Hall and Five-Story Pagoda can also be seen at night. Daigoji is famous for Toyotomi Hideyoshi's cherry-blossom party, and its autumn colours draw crowds too. Day and night admissions are completely separate, so you enter again for the evening. A good choice for anyone who wants an evening of autumn leaves and historic temple buildings in Kyoto.
