Venue & access: Former Maeyama Elementary School & Nishiyama Sake Brewery (Ichijima, Tamba) By car: about 20 minutes from Kasuga IC on the Maizuru-Wakasa Expressway (free parking). The brewery is about 10 minutes by car from the former Maeyama Elementary School.

Why You Should Visit

The first harvest festival held by Nishiyama Sake Brewery, maker of Kotsuzumi sake, in the Ichijima area of Tamba. At the main venue, the former Maeyama Elementary School, the gym hosts free tastings of Shote Shibori, a new-season junmai daiginjo muroka nama genshu brewed from early-harvest Gohyakumangoku rice, while the schoolyard fills with a local market of seasoned rice and croquettes, charcoal-grilled amago trout, organic vegetables and baked goods. About 10 minutes away by car, the brewery shop adds special sales of sake lees and amazake plus a prize draw. Entry, parking and tastings are all free. A good excuse for a drive into the Tamba countryside in new-sake season.

Can I walk between the school and the brewery?

The two venues are apart; the official site gives about 10 minutes by car. Sake lees, amazake and the prize draw are at the brewery, while tastings and the market are at the school.
