Why You Should Visit

For four days the grounds of Kitano Tenmangu host a festival of more than 100 umeshu (Japanese plum liqueurs), centred on winners of the national Umeshu Competition. You buy festival coins called ume-sen and taste in small pours of about 16 ml, and anything you like can be bought on the spot at the sales hall. There are paid tastings and a bottle lottery for the rare Dassai umeshu, the festival's signature umeshu beer, and gold-award umeshu paired with Kyoto sweets from Oimatsu and pickles from Mori. The dates fall in the shrine's autumn-leaf season, and a festival ticket takes 300 yen off entry to the Momiji-en maple garden.

FAQ

What are ume-sen coins?
They are festival-only coins you get with your ticket. A tasting pour of about 16 ml costs 1–7 coins depending on the umeshu, and umeshu beer is 7 coins. The sales hall, food pairings and Dassai tastings also accept cash and cashless payment.
What is the difference between advance and door tickets?
The price is the same; the number of coins differs. A single ticket gives 21 coins in advance and 19 on the day, a pair 42 and 40. Advance sales end on 15 October.
Can I visit the Momiji-en maple garden too?
From this year festival tickets do not include garden entry. With a festival ticket, entry is ¥1,200 instead of ¥1,500. The Tokusen Umeshu Matsuri includes a garden ticket.
