Why You Should Visit

An annual correctional exhibition at Kyoto Prison in Yamashina Ward; the 46th edition in 2026 also marks the 50th anniversary of Yamashina Ward. Goods made by inmates through prison work are displayed and sold, and visitors can tour parts of the prison that are normally closed to the public. Admission is free. There is food including a recreation of the prison's own curry, a woodworking class run by Kyoto Women's University, a flower workshop, brass band and taiko performances, and a sweets stamp rally for children up to elementary school age, so it works well as a family outing.
