átoa : Things to See & Do

Located on floors 2–4 of Kobe Port Museum, átoa is a theatrical aquarium that opened in October 2021. Built on the concept of 'Sparkle of Life,' it merges stage design and digital art with marine life displays, immediately drawing widespread attention for fundamentally reimagining what an aquarium can be. The interior is divided into eight zones. Beginning at FOYER (the Starting Cave), visitors pass through MIYABI — where Japanese aesthetics and the luminance of koi carp coexist — and PLANETS (Cosmic Sea), before arriving at the climax zone, AQUA TERRA. The spherical tank here, three meters in diameter, is the undisputed highlight: optical fibers, laser beams, and drifting marine creatures combine to create a scene that feels like gazing at a planet from deep space. átoa's defining characteristic is the equal standing given to living creatures and art. Around 100 species and 3,000 organisms share the space with 50 artworks. Projection mapping and acoustic design are of a caliber rarely found in conventional aquariums, making átoa a destination in itself for photographers and videographers. Photo opportunities are woven throughout the building, with the kind of deliberate visual staging that makes every corner feel composed for a shot. The rooftop SKY SHORE opens to sweeping views of Kobe Port and the cityscape; on clear days you can make out the Rokko Mountains on the horizon. Since the interior provides full enjoyment regardless of weather, átoa has established itself as a must-visit regardless of the forecast — for couples, families with young children, and solo travelers seeking immersive photography experiences alike.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to buy tickets in advance? Are same-day tickets available?
Online advance purchase is recommended. Date/time-specific tickets are available on the official website (atoa-kobe.jp), significantly reducing wait times at entry. Same-day tickets can also be bought at the counter, but lines may form on weekends, holidays, and summer vacation periods. Adults ¥2,600, elementary school children ¥1,500, ages 3+ ¥500 (one toddler free per adult).
Is photography and video allowed? Can I post to Instagram?
Photography is generally permitted throughout the venue. Flash photography is asked to be minimized out of consideration for the creatures, but regular and smartphone video shooting is fine. Tripods and selfie sticks are prohibited. Social media posting is welcomed — search the hashtags #átoa and #アトア for inspiration. Wearing white or reflective clothing allows projection mapping to reflect off you, making for especially photogenic shots.
Can children enjoy it? What ages is it recommended for?
Visitors of all ages can enjoy átoa. Toddlers are enchanted by colorful marine life, though parents should note that some zones have dramatic dark lighting that may unsettle very young children. Elementary school age and above will enjoy the full depth of the digital art and exhibit mechanisms. Nursing and diaper-changing facilities are available. Children under 3 enter free.
When is the best time to visit to avoid crowds?
Weekday mornings right after opening (10:00–12:00) are the least crowded. Weekends, public holidays, and summer vacation periods see higher traffic — booking timed entry tickets online in advance is advised. Late afternoon and evening can get busy with after-work visitors and date-night crowds. For the most relaxed experience in each zone, aim for a weekday morning or an off-peak period.
How is átoa different from other aquariums in the Kobe area?
While the Kobe area also has the Suma Aqualife Park and other aquariums, átoa's defining difference is its emphasis on art experience. Where conventional aquariums focus on marine biology education, átoa is an immersive theatrical environment that combines spatial staging, acoustics, and projection mapping. It's especially suited to visitors who want more than marine life — those seeking art, photogenic spaces, or a distinctive shared experience with a partner or group.
Is there parking? How do I get there by train?
átoa is located on floors 2–4 of Kobe Port Museum, in front of KOBE MERIKEN PARK ORIENTAL Hotel. From Sannomiya, take the Port Loop bus from Sannomiya Station-mae stop (approx. 8 min) and alight at Shinko-machi — the museum is right there. From Motomachi Station (JR/Hanshin), it's about a 15-minute walk. There is no dedicated or affiliated parking; please use nearby public parking lots.
