Meriken Park : Things to See & Do

The name 'Meriken' carries the history of Meiji-era Kobe. The American Consulate once stood near this waterfront, and dock workers' colloquial pronunciation of 'American' evolved into 'Meriken' — a small linguistic detail that perfectly captures Kobe's international soul. The current park was established in 1987 on reclaimed land, then underwent a major renovation in 2017 for the 150th anniversary of Kobe Port's opening. The renovation added sweeping lawns and the iconic 'BE KOBE' monument, which has since become the city's most popular photo landmark. Kobe Port Tower, the park's 108-meter symbol and the world's first pipe-structure tower, was also newly renovated in April 2024 with the addition of a rooftop deck offering 360-degree views. Its hyperbolic paraboloid form — nicknamed 'Beauty of Towers' — makes a stunning counterpoint to the white sail-shaped roof of the adjacent Kobe Maritime Museum. There is one more site inside the park that deserves quiet attention: the Kobe Port Earthquake Memorial Park, where the original quay wall tilted and cracked by the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake has been preserved exactly as it was. In a place full of tourists and selfies, this memorial offers a deeply moving reminder of what Kobe survived — and how it rebuilt itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is Port Tower admission? Do I need to reserve?
The park is free to enter. Port Tower Observation Floor is ¥1,000 for adults (high school and above), or ¥1,200 combined with the Rooftop Deck. Children (elementary to junior high) are ¥400/¥500; preschool children are free. No reservation needed, but weekends and sunset hours are busy — weekday mornings tend to be quieter.
What is the nearest station? Can I walk from Sannomiya?
The nearest station is Minato Motomachi (Kobe Subway Kaigan Line, Exit 2), about a 5-minute walk. JR/Hanshin Motomachi Station (West Exit) is about 15 minutes. From Sannomiya, walking south through the old foreign settlement district takes about 20–25 minutes and is a pleasant stroll, but the Kaigan Line subway is the most convenient option.
Where is the BE KOBE monument? Does it get crowded?
The monument is on the seaside of the park, roughly between Port Tower and the Maritime Museum. Photography is free and open to all — it's one of Kobe's most iconic photo spots. Weekday mornings or late afternoons tend to be quieter. A silhouette shot against the sunset is also very popular.
What time is best for night views?
The park is open 24 hours, so night visits are always possible. The best window is at dusk through early evening (around 19:00–21:00), when the Port Tower illumination combines with the sea and city lights. Autumn (September–November) offers the clearest air and most beautiful sunsets. Port Tower is open until 21:00, so you can enjoy elevated night views too.
What is the Kobe Port Earthquake Memorial Park?
This memorial within Meriken Park preserves a section of the original quay wall that was damaged during the Great Hanshin Earthquake of January 17, 1995. The tilted, cracked concrete stands exactly as it was, serving as a powerful reminder of the earthquake's force and a tribute to Kobe's resilience and recovery. Located at the southern end of the park, admission is free.
Are there other sights or places to eat nearby?
Just to the east lies the Kobe Old Foreign Settlement district, a charming area of Western-style historic buildings alongside modern cafes and boutiques. Walking a bit further leads to Nankinmachi (Chinatown). Harborland and the Mosaic shopping complex are also within easy walking distance, both offering a wide range of Kobe cuisine. Inside the park, Cafe & Restaurant Be KOBE serves food with sea views.
