Why You Should Visit

A traditional summer purification rite at Harima Sohsha (Itatehyozu Shrine), a short walk from Himeji Castle. The Nagoshi-no-Oharae cleanses the impurities accumulated over the first half of the year, praying for health through the months ahead. Worshippers pass three times — left, right, left — through a great 3-meter ring of woven reeds set up in the shrine grounds. Chinowa amulets are offered during the rite, and it pairs easily with a Himeji sightseeing day.
