Where should you go for craft beer in Kobe?

In this article, a Kobe local rounds up 5 craft beer breweries in Kobe, each with a completely different personality depending on the area. Here’s a look at what makes each spot unique and how to enjoy each neighborhood.

The 5 Kobe Craft Beer Spots

01
OpenAir Brewing 神戸元町店
Craft Beer & Food / Atmosphere
OpenAir Brewing 神戸元町店

A Motomachi brewery with a refined atmosphere and a food menu carefully paired with their beers. From chicken nanban to other dishes, this is a place where you can enjoy great food and beer together.

ADD. 3-2-2 Sannomiyacho, Chuo-ku, Kobe, Hyogo
NOTE. The top pick is the OpenAir IPA. Its bright aroma makes it easy to drink even for beginners.
02
Ebir Brew Studio
Craft Beer / Solo Drinking & Beer Enthusiasts
Ebir Brew Studio

Sit at the counter with a view of the brewing tanks through the glass, and you might even get to chat about the brewing process. With collaborations like their Kenbishi collab beer, this is a brewery that keeps you asking "what are you brewing next?" — deeply connected to the local community.

ADD. 3-7-12 Sumiyoshi Higashimachi, Higashinada-ku, Kobe, Hyogo (5-min walk from Hanshin Sumiyoshi Station, 8-min walk from JR Sumiyoshi Station)
NOTE. Open from 17:00 on weekdays, from 12:00 on weekends and holidays. The perfect ending: take in the sea view on Rokko Island, then head to Sumiyoshi and finish here.
03
in tha door brewing
Craft Beer & Scenic Views / View Seekers & Photography Lovers
in tha door brewing

A brewery perched by the waterfront on Rokko Island. A beer with the sea in front of you at the end of the day — it doesn't get better than this. ⚠️ Reopening planned for April 2026 (currently closed for renovations). In the meantime, they are holding POPUP events around the city — check their SNS.

ADD. Kobe (approx. 10-min walk from Rokko Liner Island Kitaguchi Station)
NOTE. After reopening, the evening-to-sunset window is especially recommended.
04
ARIMA BREWERY
Craft Beer & Hot Spring Town / Onsen Trips & Post-Bath Drinks
ARIMA BREWERY

After climbing the slopes of Arima Onsen, a cold beer is pure bliss. The ideal sequence: toast with Arima Cider → soak in the onsen → craft beer. The gentle flavor of "Arima Beer" brewed with local water pairs perfectly with that post-bath glow. This brewery is fast becoming a new highlight of the hot spring town.

ADD. Kita-ku, Kobe (approx. 3-min walk from Kobe Dentetsu Arima Onsen Station)
NOTE. Hours: 10:00–17:30, closed Wednesdays. Best enjoyed as a full-day plan paired with the onsen.
05
Kobe Minato Beer
Craft Beer & Local Bar / Casual Drinks, Shitamachi Crawl & Bar Hopping

The laid-back, local vibe of Shinkaichi feels just right here. The juicy sausages, carefully chosen to pair with their three craft beers, are an absolute must-order. Hours can be irregular, so check Instagram before you go.

ADD. Kobe (approx. 12-min walk from Kobe Municipal Subway Minatogawa Koen Station)
NOTE. Always confirm hours on Instagram (@kobe_minato_beer). Best combined with a bar crawl through Shinkaichi.

By Area | How to Build Your Kobe Craft Beer Itinerary

Motomachi → Sumiyoshi Route (Food + Brewing Experience)

OpenAir Brewing (Motomachi) → Ebir Brew Studio (Sumiyoshi) — just about 10 minutes apart by Hanshin train, these two spots have completely different vibes and can easily be done in the same day. Start with the food and atmosphere, then wind down with talk of brewing — this route captures everything great about Kobe’s craft beer scene.

Rokko Island → Sumiyoshi Route (Scenic Views + Brewery Hopping)

in tha door brewing (Rokko Island) → Ebir Brew Studio (Sumiyoshi). After gazing at the sea from Rokko Island via the Rokko Liner, make your way to Hanshin Sumiyoshi Station and wrap up the evening at Ebir. Sunset by the sea then the brewing counter at night — it plays out like a film. A route to try once in tha door brewing reopens (planned for April 2026 or later).

Arima Onsen (Paired with a Day Trip to the Hot Springs)

Access via Kobe Dentetsu and spend the day following the onsen → craft beer sequence. ARIMA BREWERY closes at 17:30, so plan for a daytime-to-early-evening schedule.

Shinkaichi & Minato (Shitamachi Bar Hop)

The local way: start at Kobe Minato Beer and combine it with indie bars in Shinkaichi. Plan with bar hopping in mind from the start.

3 Tips to Avoid Mistakes

  1. ① Always check SNS for opening hours at smaller spots

  2. There have been days when Kobe Minato Beer was closed without prior notice. Instagram check is essential.

  3. ② Even closed breweries show up at POPUPs

  4. in tha door brewing is still active with POPUP events around the city even during renovations. Follow their SNS to stay in the loop.

@in tha door brewing

  1. ③ Daytime drinking: Arima Onsen. Evening drinking: Motomachi & the port
  2. ARIMA BREWERY closes at 17:30, so Arima is strictly a daytime plan. Motomachi and the port area work well into the night.

In Summary: Kobe Craft Beer is About “Place” and “People”

After visiting these breweries, one thing stands out: the “place” and “people” are just as interesting as the beer itself.

Every spot has a completely different atmosphere the moment you open the door. Food-forward Motomachi, brewing conversations in Sumiyoshi, sweeping views on Rokko Island, the hot spring town of Arima, and the down-to-earth streets of Shinkaichi — a drink in each of these places is its own Kobe craft beer experience.

We hope this inspires you to say, “let’s check out that area next.”
